The EPB-1 Flying Plank was designed by Al Backstrom of Irvin, Texas with the help of Phil Easley and Jock Powell. These designers were seeking a simple to build and inexpensive aircraft with performance comparable to the WWII surplus sailplanes then in wide-spread use.
Approximately 150 sets of Flying Plank plans were sold, and a total of 16 are known to have been built.
